Layer Summary

Migratory bird sanctuaries are a network of nationally significant habitats for migratory birds. The role of an MBS is to protect birds - shorebirds, waterfowl and seabirds - from hunting and other sources of disturbance at their breeding grounds and on migratory stopovers. Managing these sites involves conducting periodic inspections, enforcing the regulations and hunting bans, and maintaining signs. Some habitat improvement work is done, and CWS staff carry out research at the sanctuaries. Under the Migratory Bird Sanctuary Regulations, no person shall, in a Migratory Bird Sanctuary, disturb, destroy or take nests of migratory birds, nor carry on any activity that is harmful to migratory birds or the eggs, nests or habitat of migratory birds, except under authority of a permit.
